This contemporary styled stair in a home in Wheelers Hill is an open split string “U” shaped stair in Spotted Gum. The treads and winders are oversized to eliminate the need for riser reduces. The open cantilevered treads and winders on each side add a unique design focal element upon entry to this home. Solid fixing points were required at the top the bottom of the staircase. The staircase commences with a large boxed landing step with insert tread in the landing to maintain the consistency of the bottom flight. The client wanted the stair to be self-supporting so we have used a structural channel in the ceiling to hold the glass and support the top section of the stair along with the cranked strings. The flight and level balustrade is glass using a 50mm round fittings for fixing. The glass has been capped with an ex 75x50mm timber rail.
