Free standing or floating staircase

This modern “U” shaped centre string stair is made from Ironbark. The clients didn’t want any fixing to the floor nor did they want any vertical uprights supporting the glass balustrade. To achieve these fixings points were installed in the walls at frame stage. The treads and landings have been individually joined and sandwiched to highlight the end grain and finished 65mm thick. The technique used in the fixing of the treads have been has been done so to conceal any visible fixings. These design detail features, allow the ‘visual’ of the grain in the treads to flourish. The staircase has three flights with two quarter space landings. The balustrade on this stair is 12mm toughened glass side mounted to the treadswith solid stainless steel patch fittings and welded and polished stainless rails. While on the first floor a base shoe finished in Ironbark has been used to provide structural support of the glass.
