Centre String Mono Stair with Concealed Fixings

This modern, straight flight, centre string stair in the Melbourne bayside suburb of Albert Park was made using American Oak. The treads have been individually joined and finished to conceal glue joins as would be the normal case with thicker 60mm+ treads. The way that the treads have been fixed to the core centre string has been done so to conceal any visible fixings. These design detail features, allow the ‘visual’ of the grain in the treads to flourish. The balustrade on this stair is 12mm toughened glass, which has been side mounted to the treads with solid 50mm round, stainless steel patch fittings. The glass travels up from the treads into a concealed channel in the ceiling, for a simple clean look. A 50mm round stainless steel wall rail has been utilised to provide a continuous hand hold to the flight.
